A-OK!

A-OK! The Wings of Mercury 2.1.1 [star] [star] [star] [star]

Learn to fly a Mercury spacecraft. You have to learn the actual checklists in order to complete the missions. By the time you work your way through all the simulations, you'll know as much about a Mercury capsule as John Glenn! It really cool, but it's awfully pricey! (6 Meg) (Shareware, $39)

Galactic Interaction 1.0 [star] [star]

This Program by Neil Schulman simulates what happens when galaxies collide. You set the parameters and watch the action. The program isn't especially fast, but it is easy to use. This is a pretty old program, and I don't know how it will react to system 8.0 or above. (127K) (Freeware).

Gravitation 5.0

Gravitation 5.0 [star] [star] [star] [star]

The latest version of Jeff Rommeride's outstanding Newtonian simulation. Create solar systems and watch how they move under the influence of gravity. This latest version is a great improvement over 4.0, adding color, as many as 25 objects (up from 10), and the ability to simulate much smaller bodies than before. Comes with many pre-made solar systems. This one is a must have! (367K) (Shareware, $28.95)

HourWorld

HourWorld 2.36 [star] [star]

This is a multi-talented program which shows you a map of the world along with the portions currently illuminated by the Sun and also in darkness. You can set up 5 - 7 clocks which display the current time in cities around the world. Creates moon and sun calendars, a sundial, and more. It distinguishes between astronomical twilight, civil twilight, and nautical twilight. The display even shows you exactly which spots on the Earth the Sun and Moon are directly over at any given time. Very cool! It also supposedly allows use with GPS satellites and software.

The biggest problem with it are the "sliding scale" software registration payments. You have to pay more to unlock additional features (making the program into what is often called "cripple-ware", which I personally detest). For this reason I gave it fewer stars. If you don't mind this greedy tactic, you should like the program a lot.

By Paul Software Engineering. PPC only. (960 k) (Shareware, $15.00 or $29.95 or $34.95)

Luna (After Dark)

Luna 1.0 (After Dark) [star]

Moonclock

Moonclock [star] [star] [star]

MOONCLOCK produces a continually updating, real-time graphical representation on the visual aspect of the moon. The lunar aspect may be computed geocentrically, or top centrically, for the current epoch, or for any time and date. By sofTouch APplications (check their web site, it has other cool stuff). (Shareware, $5.00).

MoonIt

MoonIt 1.1 [star] [star] [star] [star]

At system startup, it displays a graphical representation of the current phase of the moon. It also makes one of three different sounds to remind you to look at the screen. After doing its thing, it erases itself from RAM so that it doesn't occupy any system heap. This one is a must have (and the price is right)! Unfortunately, I don't believe that it works under system 8.0 or above. Written by Eiji Nitasaka. Version 1.1 (35K) (Freeware).

Moon Phaser

Moon Phaser 1.0 [star] [star]

A simple program by Dave Kalin that will show you the phase of the moon for any date up to the year 2006. Short and to the point. It works under system 7 and 8. (27K) (Shareware).

Moon Tool

Moon Tool 1.0.1 [star] [star]

A simple program by Richard Knuckey that will show you the phase of the moon at the time and location set on your Macintosh. Requires at least a 680x0 Mac. Works under system 7 and 8. My only gripe is that you cannot change the time or date for the moon without going into your computer's control panel. (88 k) (Freeware).

Newton's Aquarium

Newton's Aquarium 1.1 [star] [star] [star] [star]

A solar system simulator very similar to Gravitation. Create objects with mass and initial velocity vectors and watch them evolve over time. Try to create stable orbits. Study n-body dynamics, and much more. you can waste DAYS playing around with this. Although it appears to be a close rip-off of Gravitation (even most of the demonstration systems are the same), this program is cheaper and more versatile. Comes in 68K and PPC Macintosh flavors. By Eureka Software (640 k) (Shareware, $20.00)
